Hat Care Kits

Started with Standards, Stuck with Them
Scala Hats began in a cramped Milan workshop where our founder learned from a milliner whose family had been shaping crowns since before anyone cared about fast fashion. Three years of apprenticeship taught him that every head shape tells a different story, and every hat should honor that. We’re not churning out inventory here — we’re building pieces that actually matter, using materials from suppliers who’ve been perfecting their craft since your great-grandfather was young.
The workshop moves at its own pace, which means deadlines come second to getting the shape absolutely right. Every piece of felt gets worked and reworked until it hits that balance between classic and current. We keep things small-scale because we’re particular about every detail. When you pick up a Scala, you’re holding something that required actual human judgment at every stage — from choosing the materials to setting that final stitch.
Scala means “scale” in Italian, but we think of it more like stepping up your game without trying too hard. It’s that feeling when you catch yourself in a mirror and think, “Yeah, that works.” We make hats for people who get that the right piece doesn’t announce itself — it just makes everything else you’re wearing click into place. Good design whispers; it doesn’t need to shout.

Questions & Answers
A well-fitting hat should sit comfortably on the head without feeling too tight or sliding around. The band should rest about an inch above the eyebrows and ears. If there’s slight resistance when gently pulling upward, the fit is right.
Most hats can be spot-cleaned with a soft brush or damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a mild soap solution and let air dry away from direct heat. Leather bands benefit from occasional conditioning to prevent cracking.
Hats that have become too loose can often be adjusted using sizing tape or foam strips placed inside the band. For minor adjustments, adding tissue paper behind the sweatband works well. Steam can help reshape the crown if needed.
Round faces often look great with hats featuring higher crowns and moderate brims. Square faces pair well with rounded crowns and softer edges. Oval faces can wear most styles comfortably. The key is finding balance between hat proportions and facial features.
Store hats on a shelf or hat rack with the crown facing up to maintain shape. Avoid hanging by the brim, which can cause warping. For long-term storage, stuff the crown with tissue paper and keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Water resistance varies by material. Felt hats can handle light moisture but should be allowed to dry naturally if they get wet. Straw hats are best kept dry. Applying a water-repellent spray designed for the specific material adds protection for occasional exposure.
